DMP Visit a Historic Tithe Barn in Somerset

DMP were in Somerset and whilst there stopped off to visit the stunning Tithe Barn in Bradford upon Avon.

A Tithe Barn is a type of barn built in much of Europe in the middle ages for storing rents and tithes. To point out, one tenth of a farm's produce which was given to the Church or Clergy.

In addition, this Tithe Barn, dating from the 14th century, originally belonged to the nuns of the nearby Shaftesbury Abbey, the richest nunnery in England. It is a spectacular 14th century monastic stone barn, 51 metres long, with an amazing timber cruck roof.

Interesting in the 1980s, the barn was a filming location for the cult TV series Robin of Sherwood, uniquely doubling as Nottingham Castles Great Hall.

In essence, in the era when housing is likely to last around 100 years it is fantastic to see the construction of the barn up close and personal. The detailed connections which allow this historic barn to stand for such a long period of time is a wonder to the eye.
