China to Build a Car Free City by 2020
Did you know that China has a 78 million square foot site ready for a car free city?
The city - located just outside Chengdu, China - will be built from scratch for about 80,000 people. The "Great City" aim is to limit its resident's environmental impact by reducing waste and promoting public transportation.
Cars will be allowed in the city, however they will be unnecessary. In addition half the road space will be reserved for non-motorised traffic and all homes will be within a two-minute walk of a public park.
The project is the work of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture who expect to cut energy use by 48%. Water use is expected to be cut by 58% and as a result the city is expected to produce 89% less waste.
